Pandango: Reads like a crime novel...it's 68 pgs. long and you won't be able to stop reading. Discusses everything you'd want to know about ExxonMobil's disinformation campaign i.e. front organizations, echo chambers, information laundering, scientists of ExxonMobil etc. It's a very good read...and it's free.

Religious Faith and Global Warming Denial
Pandango: A white evangelical male is 70% more likely to deny that the world is warming. Yes, my very small take on this is that religious people are more prone to "magical thinking". In other words, God has His finger on the pulse of the planet and is performing miracles every day. They have a naivety that is so childlike and innocent that it has become destructive. Friends of mine, who desperately desire that I believe in God and the Bible the same way they do, sent me a chain email article about giants being unearthed in the desert somewhere. This picture was suppose to give validity to the Bible of the stories of giants roaming the earth a long time ago. To make a long story short - the pictures are fake. These pictures have been floating around since 2004. But not thinking critically, and wanting so desperately to believe that Biblical stories are real, leaves an evangelical in a position of faith - believing in evidence not seen - which in this case, leads to a very destructive end.
Evangelicals are so caught up in the "magical thinking" of being in the safe arms of God, that they can't intellectually come to grips with the fact that if they screw with certain rules of science, God will not only forsake them, but will make them extinct too, just like the dinosaurs. 99% of all life on Earth has been eradicated by Mother Nature since life began. We are all the 1%. Don't think that if you fool with the laws of Mother Nature, that she will see you as any more special than whatever life existed a long time ago, and is no more...

Why Do People Defend Unjust, Inept, Corrupt Systems
Pandango: It's a paradox, the more out of control you feel about government and it's inability to create change, the more likely you are the explain away its inadequacies. At least that's how the article explains it...

RationalWiki: A Comparative Guide to Science Denial
Pandango: I just found a hidden gem. Keep this one as one of your favorites. They are still calling this article a "work in progress", but it's pretty damn good...

RationalWiki: When you watch science denial in action, you will see the same sort of arguments being used over and over, often in much the same order. Here is a handy cut out and keep guide, with examples from creationists, climate change deniers and the tobacco industry.

| "My suspicion is that in another four to five years you’re going to find people writing about climate change in the same way they wrote about the nuclear threat in the 50s. It’s just going to be in every story every time. People are going to come up with a set of climate-change tropes, like three-eyed mutants and giant two-headed whatevers, because this is the threat of our epoch and it just becomes blatantly obvious to everybody. Everybody’s going to pile on to the bandwagon and probably reduce the whole concept to kindling. That may be the actual solution to a genuine threat of Armageddon – to talk about it so much that it becomes banal." | ||
—Bruce Sterling, 2005[1]

"In the denial of global warming, we are witnessing the most vicious and so far most successful attack on science in history"
Celcius.com: [The quote is from James Powell] in his recent book The Inquisition of Climate Science. The book chronicles the campaign of denial which has resulted in the widespread failure of public understanding of climate science and the long delay in addressing what is now an urgent and pressing threat to the human future.

Methane in the Arctic: The end of the world or what?
Wikipedia Favorite: Clathrate Gun Hypothesis
The consequences of a methane-driven oceanic eruption for marine and terrestrial life are likely to be catastrophic. Figuratively speaking, the erupting region "boils over," ejecting a large amount of methane and other gases (e.g., CO2, H2S) into the atmosphere, and flooding large areas of land. Whereas pure methane is lighter than air, methane loaded with water droplets is much heavier, and thus spreads over the land, mixing with air in the process (and losing water as rain). The air-methane mixture is explosive at methane concentrations between 5% and 15%; as such mixtures form in different locations near the ground and are ignited by lightning, explosions and conflagrations destroy most of the terrestrial life, and also produce great amounts of smoke and of carbon dioxide. Firestorms carry smoke and dust into the upper atmosphere, where they may remain for several years; the resulting darkness and global cooling may provide an additional kill mechanism. Conversely, carbon dioxide and the remaining methane create the greenhouse effect, which may lead to global warming. The outcome of the competition between the cooling and the warming tendencies is difficult to predict.

Many of these government officials should be forever remembered as those who continued to support harmful policies that warm our planet and destroy our natural resources. Most of these members are the Pro-Life "In God We Trust" group. They pass legislation that helps to destroy our planet, while trying to convince us that "life is sacred".

Letters of the End
Pandango: Like reading your own obituary...
On recent news that methane is gushing up from the Arctic - unabated - into the atmosphere:
The letters below are from Common Dreams

And for all creatures who breathe. Trees can be used to mitigate CO2 somewhat. But as far as I know, nothing can mitigate the effects of methane. When it breaks down it combines with oxygen in the air, reducing the supply. In the presence of heat or UV rays, it can also react with halogens, producing halogenated hydrocarbons, which are among the most dangerous carcinogens and teratogens (causing cancer and birth defects). And I do not know if the concentrations in the north will be sufficient to ignite if struck by lightning.

Hi ~Joe~,, I thought we may have from 5 to 8 more years, but am not at all surprised at the latest report from Dr. Semiletov... We still have a chance if runaway GW hasn't started yet, but I fear it's too late now to do anything to prevent it. Hope I am 100% wrong and we must never give up.

Exactly. Enjoy these moments , while our home is still relatively intact. I hate to say it , but things should start ( continue ) accelerating toward more and more rapid change. I dont even want to bring this up to friends and family , who already think of me as a chicken little, cassandra, sour grapes, negative, obamma dissing, commie whiner. And , really, why wake them from the sweet delusional slumber. We should all be looking around at the wonder of this wildly beautiful place we live, and hope it has one more hidden feedback loop somewhere that we havent accounted for that might allow the system to regain balance ( if so, it most likely will be a very rocky ride that wont accomodate our survival needs ). So im gonna enjoy this beautiful warm December day here in NC and admire the spring flowers blooming in my yard.

I would like to think that humans could be that feedback , that we could muster the cooperation and understanding to generate some kind of an effective response. But i don't think we can. Even if we could generate the response, it seems the cat is out of the bag. What i can only hope for is something like the gulf stream shutting down, making equatorial regions warmer but throwing the poles back into a glacial regeneration stage. Or maybe the explosion of a supervolcano that will put forth enough particulates to block out most of our sunlight for a decade or two, or five. one can hope. A "rocky ride" for sure, but at least earth would come out with an atmosphere similar to one we have now, rather than a mercury or venus scenario that we could well be headed towards, more quickly than we thought. I was hoping i wouldn't read an article like this for about 20 years.....or never. But there it is.

A "MINOR" correction ~~Amurkan~~.
Dr. James hansen and all of the other "climate" scientists,,, TOTALLY IGNORED the Arctic methane threat and they NEVER computed it into their climate computer modeling.... NONE of them did.
Due to that most serious error on their part, they all kept saying,,,"we have to act soon or we will have a serious problem by the year 2100, or by the end of the century." instead of saying,, "we have to act tomorrow or else."
They were flat out wrong and so the world's leaders thought we had (lots of time) to do some more (studies), instead of insuring we stopped burning coal and repaced all of the coal fired power plants in the world with clean energy power,,, solar,, geothermal,, and tidal.
We had the time to do that, but we no longer have the time to do anything about it... It is over, there will be no turning back,, no do-overs... (*Runaway*) global warming is IRREVERSIBLE.

There is a serious flaw in the newspaper article... Qupte,,, ("a greenhouse gas 20 times more potent than carbon dioxide – have been seen bubbling to the surface of the Arctic Ocean ").. End Quote.
Methane, CH4, in the atmosphere is 20 times as potert as Co2 AFTER 100 years in the atmosphere..... It is (*105*) times as potent for the first 20 years it is in the atmosphere.... We are not going to see it drop below 105 times as potent because we won't be here to see it.
And Dr. Igor Semiletov who leads the ISSS scientific teams of scientists, does not use the word "bubbling",,, he says "Gushing" out .. Anyway, it is far more serious than the first paragraph of the newpapers report.states.
If just a fraction of the methane in the Arctic releases it will be the beginning of the end for all of us.. Just 10 billion tons if released over a five year time period would cause a world wide catastrophic disaster for all life on Earth and it appears that it is now releasing at a far more amount than just 10 billion tons over a five year time frame... Far more. .
Be nice to your children, tell them you are really very sorry for not doing something about this seven years ago, when the Arctic methane threat was first published by Dr, John Atcheson in an article here at Common Dreams.

Very amusing. My life is a dead end, but continuing to have more kids on a finite planet where the population increases at three additional people per second, while wars rage for diminished resources, while climate chaos continues, that is a hopeful future! LOL! Oh my gawd, we are so fucked.

The news is so bad that the facts are not reported. Methane is 105 times stronger than CO2 for the first 20 years. Look it up. Oceans are 30% more acidic than before industrial age. This is happening 10 times faster than anything in earth's geological history. There has been a 40% reduction in phyoplankton since 1950. This type of plankton produces 50% of earth's oxygen. The "natural" gas industry is the largest single source of methane emissions. Methane venting is considered normal in the production, storage and distribution of natural gas. Escaped methane from gas fracking threaten to tip us into catastrophic runaway global over-heating. The total impact of the shale gas industry may be worse than coal. This industry is enjoying boom times in the United States. We have proven we will burn anything to keep the American Dream alive even if it means our own extinction. Monkey see, monkey do nothing. The most important bit of news from this article is the massive increase from a study Dr Semiletov published in 2010. Guess what happens when El Nino kicks in and when the sunspot cycle ramps up. Expect this report to be ignored. Mother Earth is letting go a mighty fart that may end most life on the surface of this planet. Ocean heating and acidification will wipe out most ocean life. But, what's even scarier is that I want a new IPad for Christmas. So let's carry on like nothing's happening and focus on economic "recovery". God, we're stupid and greedy.

I am truly sorry to say you are mistaken ~PaulK~... I sincerely wish you weren't.
We have run out of time... If only 20 billion tons of the trillions of tons of methane in the Arctic escapes into our atmosphere, it will raise global temperatures by at least 2 more degrees C.
20 billion tons of methane released into the atmosphere now would be equivelant to 2 trillion tons of Co2 added to the greenhouse gas mixture.
Scinetists are very concerned that 44 billion tons of Co2 was emitted by human activity in 2010... That is a drop in the atmosphere to 2 billion tons of methane gas. And if 20 billion tons of methane escaped over a five year period of time, that would be just as dangerous as if 20 billion tons escapes this next year, we'd just have a bit more time to say goodby to our children.
10 billion tons released will be a catastrophic disaster and it sure does look like at least that much will release very, very soon... A trillion+ tons could release very soon as the methne feedback loop kicks in... So don't worry about sea levels rising 20 feet or more,, we most likely won't be here to see it. LIfe on earth is soon going to be very harsh... I had hoped we had another five or more years to try to prevent the Arctic ice from reucing further, and before this happened... Hope however is sometimes just another four letter word.

I struggle to understand just how the fuse of the global methane bomb could be so short. Two relatively recent interglacial temperature peaks (the Eemian and Holsteinian) were at least 0.5°C warmer than today, and yet there's no indication of an atmospheric methane pulse in the ice cores from those episodes. Considering how long deep ocean water takes to heat up, marine temperatures matching the Eemian peak are far in the future.
The methane hydrate deposits in question are more than a few hundred thousand years old. How did they survive previous episodes of (so far) comparable warming over the past few million years? During the PETM 55 mya, where a global methane discharge is more well established, why was the pace of warming so relatively gradual (ten times slower than today)?
Of course, observations are the trump card. You can't argue with what you're directly observing. But there's a serious conflict with reasonable expectations, based on paleoclimate. Either the paleoclimate record is skewed somehow, or Semiletov's impression that methane releases are dramatically increasing is wrong, or there's something special about the state of the Earth today which makes the methane hydrate deposits more fragile than in previous global warming peaks.

It's quite possible Semiletov's 2010 study was limited in area or time compared to the one this article is based upon. But plumes a whole K in diameter venting directly into the atmosphere, not being diluted/absorbed by the ocean, is very disconcerting. Other than methane breathers, what organisms can live in such a zone, or even traverse it? It seems anoxic enough to create a dead zone. The region recently explored is miniscule in relation to the whole of the Siberian Shelf as can easliy be seen on the map here, http://geology.com/world/arctic-ocean-map.shtml or here (smaller pdf file) http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/ngm/0401/feature6/images/mp_download.6.pdf or here (large pdf file), http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/islands_oceans_poles/arctic_region_pol_2009.pdf As you can see, the continental shelf region under the Arctic Ocean is vast and mostly within Russian territory, which is also where the most hydrocarbon deposits are likely located, map http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/islands_oceans_poles/arctic_russian_claims_2008.jpg
If Semiletov's observations are extrapolted for the entire shelf, then we ought to see increases in methane concentration. Another correlation I note when looking at maps of sea ice extent and sea floor topography is the inabilty of ice to remain atop the shelf for long once melting season begins as the shallower water heats faster, with each year likely experiencing a rise in water temp, which also means an associated sea floor temp rise, with each year becoming just a little warmer as we would expect via a positive feedback. I would like to see such data, and I'm surely not alone

Here ~~karlof1~~ This article may help you a little...And it was written prior to the recent discoveries by Dr. Semiletov.
In 2008 methane levels in the Arctic region were up to 2,000 times above normal in some areas and overall were higher than they had been during the past 420,000 years.
http://zipcodezoo.com/Trends/Trends%20in%20Atmospheric%20Methane.asp
One paragraph from the article... ("The concentration of methane (CH4), the most abundant organic trace gas in the atmosphere, has increased dramatically over the last few centuries, more than doubling its concentration. Atmospheric methane levels of the past 150 years far higher than those of the previous 420,000 years, and are currently 2.5 times as high as any previous level.")
http://thinkprogress.org/romm/2011/11/21/374141/heat-trapping-co2-new-high-growth-methane-levels-are-rising-again/
One paragraph from the article about Co2 ... ("Between 2009 and 2010, its atmospheric abundance increased by 2.3 parts per million – higher than the average for both the 1990s (1.5 parts per million) and the past decade (2.0 parts per million). For about 10,000 years before the start of the industrial era in the mid-18th century, atmospheric carbon dioxide remained almost constant at around 280 parts per million.").
And to reply to ~~Aleph Null~~... A catastrophic global warming and mass extintion of life can occur with normal amounts of methane releases... High atmospheric Co2 levels can alone do the trick.
Massive amounts of CH4 releasing,, as it is now beginning to do in ernest,, will most certanily also do the trick... You aren't (once again) trying to downplay the deadly dangerous situation what is now been discovered by Dr. Semiletov are you Mr. Null, just so you can say Wayne is wrong? That's pretty sick minded if that's your intent.

Perhaps it's that during Eemian and prior there wasn't relatively rapid anthropogenic warming; perhaps the state of the hydrate deposits has changed in a way to make them more vulnerable. There could be a hundred complicating factors we don't understand. Maybe we've abused the fuck out of the earth from too many angles.
Agreed that observations are the trump card. Empiricism.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, but is the stock market up or down today? And is economic growth rebounding? It's about the Economy, not the Ecology, right? You can have my earth raping culture when you pry it from by cold dead (global warming induced) fingers. Ohhh look, a cute new phone, gotta go!!

James Hansen, Club of Rome speech, 2009:
"Methane is an especially powerful greenhouse gas. There are large amounts of methane presently locked up, frozen, in high latitude tundra and, especially, in ocean sediments on continental shelves. We know from Earth's history that this frozen methane can be released suddenly by sufficient warming - thus this methane has the potential to greatly amplify humanmade global warming, if that warming reaches a tipping point, such that large volumes of frozen methane begin to melt."

A huge spike in global temperatures could well be the planet's way of eradicating the viral threat it see's to all life on the planet. A system with the embedded purpose of allowing life to evolve will have self correcting mechanisms when threatened. Many will say its just happenstance while others will claim its by design - one things for sure, what has been set in motion cannot be corrected to our standards without considerable change to how we go about our daily lives. The correction will be to standards higher than we're able to comprehend in our present state of development. We must evolve to survive - old paradigms are failing as we face ever increasing population growth and all its myriad complex interactions.
