Drought Monitor: November Aquifer Update
The Drought Monitor is a blog that frequently reports on "Aquifer Conditions of the Barton Springs/Edwards Aquifer Conservation District, Hays & Travis Counties, Texas".

Astonishing: 2011 Was Second Most Severe Drought in Texas Since 1789
Texas Climate News "A Drought for the Centuries: It hasn't been this dry in Texas since 1789"
Going back to the year 1550, only 1789 experienced the same type of drought conditions we experienced in 2011. That's 461 years ago!
Incredible considering our own Governor and most of the Texas state and federal legislature believe that human induced (anthropogenic) climate change is junk science. Yeah, those guys at NASA don't know what the hell they're talking about. And those quacks that do the assessment reports for the IPCC don't know Jack from Jill either. How in the name of hellonia did it get to this?
I wonder how many wildfires Texas will have next summer? Can't wait to see how many record breaking heat temperatures 2012 has in store for Texas. Please, oh please, wake the hell up.

American Lung Association: State of the Air Report
The American Lung Association has a pretty informative website on the state of the air quality where you live. It also lists the most polluted cities in the U.S. by ozone, year round particle pollution, and short-term particle pollution.
San Antonio has a grade of "F" in ozone pollution (no surprise) and Houston along with the Dallas/Ft. Worth areas is also listed as having the most polluted air in the U.S.
You can see how your city ranks by going to their website here:

Mob Oil: Chevron Drags Ecuador Law Suit Through the Appeals Court for Two Decades
February story in BBC news illustrates how money can hold off justice in the American court while the continued exploitation of people and the environment continue. It's amazing what a company can do with billions of dollars - cheating people out their lives and livelihoods - legally.
Highlights of the story: BBC News: Chevron fined for Amazon pollution by Ecuador court
*In February of 2011, Ecuador court fined Chevron $9.5 billion for an illegal act that took place over 20 years ago because the case was forced through the appeals courts in the U.S. only to be decided that the case should be held in Ecuador!
*Chevron, in 2001, was blamed for dumping billions of gallons of toxic materials into unlined open-air pits as well as into the Amazon rivers.
*The people in Ecuador plan on appealing the decision because they feel the fine is not enough.
*Large portions of the rain forest were destroyed and the Ecuadorian people have been exposed to increased cancer risk from the dumping of toxic chemicals.
*Companies doing business in developing countries don't have the same anti-pollution standards as developed countries.
*Between 1972 and 1992 Chevron dumped 18 million gallons of toxic chemicals into the rivers and rain forest.
--------------------------------------------------
More details about Chevron dumping in Ecuador is here: Chevron's Toxic Legacy in Ecuador
-------------------------------------------------
There needs to be a better U.S. business model! If people are universally the same, as our Founding Fathers believed (and those people of faith believe), then the exploitation of people, environment, and natural resources by uber-rich businesses should not be allowed! How can we demand "Drill Baby Drill!" when this kind of thing is allowed to go on. There are better greener alternatives. We have a moral obligation to humans and creation to begin moving in that direction.

Mob Oil: Chrevron oil spill in Brazil bigger than admitted
![]() |
| Location of Chevron oil spill. |
An oil well owned by Chevron which is located about 230 miles from Rio de Janerio is dumping oil into the Atlantic. The leak started a week ago and is now thought to be larger than what Chevron had admitted to. Brazil official: Oil leak bigger than thought
Brazilian officials are criticising Chevron not only for trying to blame the spill on "natural seepage" (investigators have discovered that the spill was a result of Chevron operations) but also on their slow action to clean the spill. As of Tuesday no vessels were seen at the spill site, even though Chevron had stated that vessels were at the site cleaning up the spill. Updated: Brazilian officials confirm Chevron caused offshore oil spill
What does the McRib sandwich have in common with foam mats and rubber shoes?
McDonald's McRib sandwich seems to have the same common ingredient as foam mats and rubber shoes. It's not enough to kill you, but it makes you think twice before taking a bite.

Imagine enormous circles of trash circulating in our oceans, trapped by currents and caught in a perennial state of motion until washing up on an island or seashore. It's our shit - and it weighs roughly 100 million tons.

What Do Herman Cain and Newt Gingrich Have in Common? Women and Scandals
Herman Cain isn't the only one in trouble for his extramarital escapades with women. Newt likes his women too.
August 11, 2010 article from theweek.com has some interesting news on Newt: Newt Gingrich: 5 Juciest Details from His Ex-Wife
Herman Cain isn't the only one that can get himself into trouble over money and the IRS (Herman Cain's Other Big Scandal: A Possible IRS Violation). Newt likes his money too.
On January 21, 1997 then House Speaker Newt Gingrich was fined $300,000 for ethics violations. First time for such a thing to happen in the House in its 208-year history. You can read the Washington Post story here >> House Reprimands, Penalizes Speaker
When you read the Washington Post article, it's interesting to note how the members of Congress talk about "partisanship" playing a part in his punishment!
Also, a new scandal may be brewing for Newt. Just out today: NBC: Gingrich can't say how much he netted from Freddie consulting. Completely unrelated to the ethics scandal, but it is interesting that this article mentions that Newt made $300,000 working for Freddie in 2006 -- the exact same amount he was fined in 1997!

Mob Mines: Police Protecting Freeport Mine in Papua Attack/Kill Striking Workers and How This Relates to OWS
This is what happens:
A U.S. business goes to another country to exploit their workers and destroy their environment for a shit-load of money. They know they can get away with it because the people are poor and the government is corrupt (willing to ignore human rights violations as long as they are paid well and paid often). Meanwhile, the people and workers of the community suffer until eventually they get so pissed off that they decide to do something about it. The result is normally a lot of violence and a lot of dead workers. This is what is happening at the Freeport mine in Papua.
The Freeport mine, located in West Papua and controlled by the Indonesian government, is the largest gold mine in the world. They make billions of dollars a year yet only pay their workers $1-$3 a hour!!
The indiginous people of Papua are enraged, not only by the workers rights abuses, but also at how the mine has been destroying their environment and their environmental resources. No one who has the power to do anything is paying attention because they either don't care or are being paid enough money not to care. Read full story here: NPR: In Indonesia, Anger Against Mining Giant Grows
The pictures in this link look eerily like the violence taking place against OWS protesters in the U.S.
-----------------------------------------------------
This is what happens when workers rights are ignored and businesses are allowed to pay wages at whatever level they see fit. It is Michele Bachmann and Ron Paul's idea of getting rid of the minimum wage entirely.
The idea that businesses will behave under the magical spell of market influence in regard to workers pay and workers rights is so bat-shit-fucking-looney that you either have to be ignorant to believe it or paid by mob business interests to say it. There will always be more workers than businesses. Businesses will almost always have the upper hand on the worker because if the worker doesn't do what the business wants, they can just fire the worker and hire someone else waiting in line for a job who is desperate enough to work for pennies and work under hostile, horrible, unsafe conditions. Many businesses, if not forced to pay a minimum wage, will pay close to nothing to produce their product or service for free, so they can realize huge profits for themselves. That is how the true market works. Why else do you think businesses want to work overseas? Because overseas, in other countries, they don't have the same workers rights that we have here in the U.S. The businesses don't have to pay the workers shit. They can then ship the finished good back over to the U.S. (For free if there is a "free-trade agreement" with that country! Meanwhile, we have to pay for shipping!) and make over 100% profit because the cost to make the good was so cheap (virtually free because of low wages).
Many of the OWS protesters are fighting for worker rights and wage and tax equality. Violence by police against protesters is what happens when business interests are put above human/individual interests. Like I wrote above, there will always be more workers than businesses, and when you piss off the workers, you have a movement that won't go away - until the wrong becomes right.

Mob Oil: More Oil Spills - This Time in the Niger Delta Thanks to Royal Dutch Shell
Two large oil spills in 2008 by Royal Dutch Shell have destroyed the lives and livelihoods of the people living in the Niger Delta. Amnesty International is saying that Shell must pay $1 billion to pay for the spills and environmental clean-up. This was in 2008 and they still haven't cleaned up the mess?? Read full story here: Royal Dutch Shell Oil Spill in 2008 (The picture in this link is amazing!)
Now, this past weekend in November, Royal Dutch Shell has reported another fresh oil spill in Nigeria. It is their twelfth oil spill since August!! Royal Dutch Shell Oil Spill 2011
Shouldn't we feel just a little regret over the the fact that the lifestyle we enjoy here in the U.S. is because others are being exploited horribly elsewhere? Is that really a pro-life stance?

Rachel Maddow Discusses Climate Change with Bill Nye the Science Guy
This interview took place in February of 2010 when a large snow storm hit the Northeastern part of the United States. The storm brought out the crazy, bat shit critics of global warming (most of them appearing on Fox News).
A few points to make here:
(1) The same stupid denialist arguments against climate change used a year ago are still used today.
(2) Points made by denialists to disprove climate change are just as irrelevant today as they were a year ago or thirty years ago.
(3) Climate denialists are negationist opportunists, and will use any given chance to mock global warming when it's cold outside. So when we have another huge snowstorm, expect the zombie hordes to start denying (which already happened this past October).
(4) The point Bill Nye and Rachel Maddow made in 2010 are just as relevant today as they were a year ago or 30 years ago.
It's a good interview. I wish Maddow would discuss the topic more on her show.
