(video) Climate Change -- "Those" e-mails and science censorship

Video was made in 2009 and takes a thoughtful and honest look at Climategate and explains the meaning of the e-mails written by scientists and discusses if there might have been any attempt at scientific censorship.  This topic is very relevant today becasause other hacked e-mails have been released to the press just recently in an attempt to discredit the science behind climate change.

This video interview with Noam Chomsky was produced in 1993, but it is still surprisingly relevant to today, especially in light of the Occupy Wall Street Protests.

Who Made Climate Change Denying Believable?

Good research article by Nebraskans for Peace.  The article, Who are these Climate Change "Deniers"? helps take the reader back to where climate change denial first appeared, and explains why it is persisting despite the record temperatures and drought the U.S. is experiencing.

The only addition I would have made would be to explain how the propaganda machine, Fox News, is helping to fuel half-truths and lies to the doubting deniers because of their enormous viewing audience.

It's a good way to educate yourself on how/why climate change denial is persisting.

Drought Update for Austin/ San Antonio

I have cut and pasted what is most interesting to me.

To read the full statement you can click here: National Weather Service

DROUGHT INFORMATION STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE AUSTIN/SAN ANTONIO TX
235 PM CST THU NOV 17 2011

...ALL OF SOUTH CENTRAL TEXAS...THE HILL COUNTRY AND RIO
GRANDE PLAINS REMAIN IN MODERATE TO EXCEPTIONAL DROUGHT
STATUS...

SYNOPSIS...
THE DROUGHT CONTINUES ACROSS ALL OF SOUTH CENTRAL TEXAS.
FOR THE MONTH OF NOVEMBER THERE HAS BEEN ONE SIGNIFICANT
RAINFALL EVENT ON NOVEMBER 14TH-15TH. THE RAINFALL WAS
WIDESPREAD AND AMOUNTS VARIED GREATLY RANGING FROM A
HALF-INCH TO THREE INCHES. MORE FREQUENT AND WIDESPREAD
RAINFALL EVENTS OVER SEVERAL MONTHS WILL BE NECESSARY TO
MAKE A SIGNIFICANT IMPACT ON THE CURRENT RAINFALL DEFICITS.

THE LA NINA PATTERN IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE ACROSS THE
EQUATORIAL PACIFIC THROUGH THE NORTHERN HEMISPHERE WINTER.
THIS USUALLY MEANS BELOW AVERAGE RAINFALL AND WARMER THAN
AVERAGE TEMPERATURES DURING THE LATE FALL AND INTO THE
WINTER ACROSS SOUTH CENTRAL TEXAS.

THE US DROUGHT MONITOR (USDM) VALID NOVEMBER 15TH AND
ISSUED ON NOVEMBER 17TH...SHOWED ALL OF THE HILL COUNTRY
AND SOUTH CENTRAL TEXAS IN MODERATE (D1) TO EXCEPTIONAL
DROUGHT (D4) CONDITIONS.

EXTREME DROUGHT (D3) TO EXCEPTIONAL DROUGHT (D4) CONDITIONS
PREVAIL THE REMAINDER OF SOUTH CENTRAL TEXAS.

MOST OF THE STATE IS CURRENTLY IN MODERATE DROUGHT (D1) TO
EXCEPTIONAL DROUGHT (D4). EIGHTY-NINE PERCENT OF THE STATE
IS IN EXTREME (D3) TO EXCEPTIONAL (D4) DROUGHT STATUS AND
SIXTY-FIVE PERCENT OF THE STATE IS IN EXCEPTIONAL (D4)
DROUGHT STATUS.

AS OF NOVEMBER 17TH...BURN BANS WERE IN EFFECT
FOR 27 COUNTIES IN SOUTH CENTRAL TEXAS. THE COUNTIES WITH
ESTABLISHED OUTDOOR BURN BANS INCLUDE BANDERA...BASTROP...
BEXAR...BLANCO...BURNET...CALDWELL...COMAL...DEWITT...
DIMMIT...EDWARDS...FAYETTE...FRIO...GILLESPIE...KARNES...
KENDALL...KERR...KINNEY...LEE...LLANO...MAVERICK...MEDINA...
REAL...TRAVIS...UVALDE...VAL VERDE...WILLIAMSON AND ZAVALA
COUNTIES.

THE NOVEMBER 17TH KEETCH-BYRAM DROUGHT INDEX (KBDI) SHOWED KBDI
VALUES RANGED FROM 300 TO 500 ACROSS PORTIONS OF SOUTH CENTRAL
TEXAS AND PORTIONS OF THE RIO GRANDE PLAINS. THE REMAINDER OF
THE REGION HAS KBDI VALUES OF 500 TO 700.

THE TEXAS FOREST SERVICE USES THE KBDI AS A MEANS FOR RELATING
CURRENT AND RECENT WEATHER CONDITIONS TO POTENTIAL OR EXPECTED
FIRE BEHAVIOR. THE KBDI IS A NUMERICAL INDEX CALCULATED DAILY
FOR EACH COUNTY. EACH NUMBER IS AN ESTIMATE OF THE AMOUNT OF
PRECIPITATION...IN HUNDREDTHS OF AN INCH... NEEDED TO BRING THE
SOIL BACK TO SATURATION. THE INDEX RANGES FROM ZERO TO 800...
WITH ZERO REPRESENTING A SATURATED SOIL AND 800 A COMPLETELY
DRY SOIL. REMEMBER...THAT FIRE DANGER CAN CHANGE QUICKLY FROM
ONE DAY TO ANOTHER AS WINDS AND RELATIVE HUMIDITY VARY.

CLIMATE SUMMARY...

WITH THE CONTINUED LACK OF RAINFALL...ALL LOCATIONS CONTINUE
TO SEE RAINFALL DEFICITS GROW. ACROSS MUCH OF THE REGION
RAINFALL DEFICITS ARE 20 TO 30 INCHES.
LOCATIONS OVER THE
RIO GRANDE PLAINS CURRENTLY HAVE RAINFALL DEFICITS OF 5 TO 10
INCHES.

THROUGH MIDNIGHT NOVEMBER 16TH...SAN ANTONIO INTERNATIONAL HAS
RECEIVED 0.53 OF AN INCH RAIN. THIS IS 0.92 OF AN INCH BELOW
THE NORMAL OF 1.45 INCHES. THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE AT SAN ANTONIO
INTERNATIONAL SO FAR FOR NOVEMBER IS 64.2 DEGREES. THIS IS 0.5
OF A DEGREE ABOVE THE NORMAL OF 63.7 DEGREES.

PRECIPITATION/TEMPERATURE OUTLOOK...

DURING THE NEXT SEVERAL DAYS...THERE WILL BE A SLIGHT CHANCE
FOR RAINFALL. ALTHOUGH THE RAINFALL COULD BE WIDESPREAD...
MOST OF THE RAIN WILL BE LIGHT WITH ONLY SMALL ACCUMULATIONS.
TEMPERATURES WILL START OUT NEAR NORMAL AND RISE TO ABOVE
NORMAL LEVELS FOR MID NOVEMBER.

THE LONGER RANGE OUTLOOK FOR DECEMBER 2011 THROUGH FEBRUARY
2012...CREATED ON NOVEMBER 17TH IS CALLING FOR GREATER CHANCES
FOR ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES AND GREATER CHANCES FOR BELOW
NORMAL RAINFALL.

HYDROLOGIC SUMMARY AND OUTLOOK...

THE LACK OF RAINFALL CONTINUES TO CAUSE LAKES AND RESERVOIRS
TO FALL.

SHORT TERM AND LONG TERM HYDROLOGIC IMPACTS ALONG WITH
AGRICULTURAL IMPACTS CONTINUE ACROSS THE REGION. MANY STOCK
TANKS REMAIN EXTREMELY LOW AND MANY HAVE DRIED UP.

THE 7 DAY STREAM FLOW AVERAGE IS IN THE TO 10 TO 24 PERCENT
(BELOW NORMAL) RANGE OR LESS THAN 10 PERCENT (MUCH BELOW) FOR
BASINS ACROSS SOUTH CENTRAL TEXAS AND THE RIO GRANDE PLAINS.

RESERVOIR CONDITIONS AS OF NOVEMBER 10TH...

AREA LAKES...RIVERS AND RESERVOIRS REMAIN WELL BELOW NORMAL
POOL ELEVATIONS. LEVELS ARE LIKELY TO CONTINUE FALLING AS THE
DROUGHT CONTINUES. LEVELS SHOULD NOT FALL AS QUICKLY WITH
EVAPORATION RATES DECREASING DUE TO COOLER TEMPERATURES.
RESTRICTIONS...

THE SAN ANTONIO WATER SYSTEM (SAWS) REMAINS IN STAGE 2 WATER
RESTRICTIONS. THE MANDATORY RESTRICTIONS AND SPOTTY RAIN HAVE
HELPED TO KEEP THE EDWARDS AQUIFER LEVEL ABOVE THE STAGE 3
LEVEL OF 640 FEET.

THE EDWARDS AQUIFER IS CURRENTLY READING 647.7 FEET AS OF
NOVEMBER 17TH. THIS IS 20.0 FEET BELOW THE HISTORICAL MONTHLY
AVERAGE FOR NOVEMBER WHICH IS 667.7 FEET. THE AQUIFER LEVEL
IS 27.0 FEET BELOW THE LEVEL OBSERVED AT THIS TIME IN NOVEMBER
2010.

MANY COMMUNITIES ACROSS SOUTH CENTRAL TEXAS HAVE IMPLEMENTED
THE FIRST...SECOND...THIRD AND FOURTH STAGES OF WATER
RESTRICTIONS DUE TO THE CONTINUED DRY CONDITIONS AND
DECREASING WATER SUPPLIES.

NEXT ISSUANCE DATE...

THIS STATEMENT WILL BE UPDATED AROUND DECEMBER 1, 2011 OR
SOONER IF NECESSARY.

Liberal Media Ignores Recent IPCC Summary Report

It's not surprising that Fox News ignores the findings of the IPCC draft report, but why is the progressive media ignoring it's findings as well?

The Rachel Maddow Show and Keith Olbermann are both focusing on the Occupy Wall Street movement, but not climate change.  I suspect that the Occupy movement is so large and popular that it could begin to sway public opinion on which party will hold political power in the 2012 election, but surely there is a way to attach the dangers of global warming along with the OWS movement?

The top 7 Fox News shows consistently have over 1 million viewers .  The O'Reily Factor has over 2 million viewers.  Compare that with the top liberal news show - The Rachel Maddow Show - who only gets around 850,000 viewers. There are certainly more people who are watching these conservative Fox News programs which means that more people are being told lies or half-truths about climate change.  There needs to be more of a push-back from the liberal media on this.  I just can't figure out why it's being ignored.

How much is the 1% to blame for the climate crisis?

I hate to point fingers, but...

Our current world population is becoming a problem.  The USA Today reported in this last weekends newspaper (November 18-20) that India tops countries with the most births per day at 76,517.  China came in second at 44,727 and Indonesia came in third at 12,562.   But how much should we blame  developing countries for their enormous populations?

A blog in Climate Progress: Is the Climate Crisis Caused by the 7 Billion or the 1 percent?, explains that human and environmental activists may be too distracted by population growth, when in actuality they need to focus more on the destruction of our environment and natural resources by the corporations and those of the 1%. The article argues that population will take care of itself if the environment in which we live becomes more sustainable and livable.

What the frack Is going on!

If you don't know how much water is used in fracking (or don't care), you might want to read this article.  Seems Texas has a big drought and even bigger frackers using a large portion of Texas' much needed water.

Climate Progress: Water. Coal. Fracking. Texas. Sanity. One of These Words Does Not Belong

Amazing!! Water Usage by the Top 1% and Corporations in San Antonio

Even though Texas is suffering through an intense drought, record breaking temperatures, and severe wildfires in 2011, the top 1% don't seem to be letting water restrictions stop them from running up expensive water bills and using an unbelievable amount of water.

The San Antonio Express News reported in an August article "A green lawn at any price" that the top 1% (about 100 homes) of water users in San Antonio use as much water as about 3,000 average households.  The "top 200 [homes] consumed more than 31 million gallons, enough to fill 56 Olympic-sized swimming pools. By far, most of the water went for lawns and landscaping."

"The top 100 users for SAW's (San Antonio Water) used 16,996,083 gallons of water" and
"The top 100 users for BexarMet used 14,187,000 gallons of water" !

One of the top 10 abusers of water was David Robinson, former professional basketball player for the San Antonio Spurs.  He was apologetic (I guess), but he has been a continuous water abuser since 2009.

What do the top 1% have to say about their water abuse?

Aliece Hollis, an infamous top 5 water abuser who lives in Terrell Hills, had this to say about her insane water usage "This house is on 4.5 acres of land," she said. "Unfortunately, it just takes more water to water all of that."  [Uh, ok.] "For me, it would not look right for the yard to be a xeriscape," Hollis said. "We are not trying to abuse anything. ... It's just that we have this big lawn that we try to maintain."

Yeah, I can really sense that you are a good person Ms. Hollis, deep deep down in that dark dark heart of yours.  The other 99% of us really do understand that keeping an unsustainable lawn green and healthy at the expense of less water and higher water bills for everybody else is just a reality we all will have to get used to.

Yeah, right...

Other BexarMet offenders include:

Ronald Reagan High School: 1,340,000 gallons of water in June!  I question whether that is a good  use of taxpayers money and water.

Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints: Would Jesus really want you using 842,000 gallons of water?
